John Christopher Participates in New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting
John P. Christopher, a Partner with the Firm, recently attended the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) 139th Annual Meeting in New York City. The Annual Meeting was held at the Midtown Hilton from January 25th through January 29th. Mr. Christopher is an active member of the NYSBA, serving as an officer of the Young Lawyers Section (YLS), a member of the Executive Committee of the Real Property Law Section, and a section delegate to the House of Delegates.
This year, Mr. Christopher was elected to the position of Chair-Elect of the YLS. As Chair-Elect, Mr. Christopher will continue to oversee the governance of the YLS, the largest section in the NYSBA, having approximately 6,521 members.
On the agenda at the House of Delegates meeting were several items of great significance and consequence to the legal profession and the public, including, but not limited to, pro bono initiatives, judicial salaries, third-party legal services, the New York State Constitution and attorney discipline. Of particular importance, the House of Delegates discussed New York’s upcoming 2017 referendum on whether to convene a constitutional convention. New York’s Constitution mandates such a statewide referendum be held every 20 years. The next referendum will be on November 7, 2017. NYSBA has been studying this issue and, at the November 2015 House of Delegates Meeting, voted to approve a report recommending the establishment of a non-partisan preparatory Constitutional Commission. At the Annual Meeting, President David P. Miranda reported that Governor Cuomo has agreed with the Association’s recommendation and has proposed investing $1 million to create a Constitutional Commission. NYSBA will continue to study this issue and make recommendations to the state as necessary.
